The department focuses to prepare competent students for the dynamic fields of pharmaceutical industry, hospital and clinical pharmacy as well as academic sectors. With the successful completion of this degree students will be able to explore the infinite opportunities of healthcare sectors.

Program structure

The purpose of introducing Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) curriculum in City University is to introduce beginning pharmacy students to the technologic and scientific principles underlying the preparation of dosage forms and drug delivery systems and to their use in patient care. Through an integrated course curriculum students will gain an understanding of the interrelationships between physical pharmacy principles, bio-pharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics, dosage form design, product formulation, small- and large-scale product manufacture, and the clinical application of pharmaceuticals in patient care.

A 4 year (8 semesters) Pharmacy undergraduate programme has been designed including topics of recent trends in this field. The principal objectives of this curriculum are:

  • To impart scientific knowledge for the identification, formulations, preparation, standardization, quality control and uses of drugs and medicines and effective management of their distribution and sale.
  • To produce a skilled manpower to manage the affairs of hospital pharmacies, pharmaceutical industries, community pharmacy services, drug administration and other organizations in drug research, marketing, sales and administration.
  • To encourage research on different fields of pharmacy so as to develop newer techniques of formulation, quality control and standardization of drugs.

Requirements for degree awarding (Courses, Reports, Thesis, etc.)

The course curriculum of the Department of Pharmacy is accredited by the rules and regulation of Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh. The total Credit requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honors) are 170. Out of these 15 Credits are Pharmacy Support Courses, 4 Credits are Pharmacy Electives which is compulsory as per requirement of the City University. The departmental Core Courses account for 145 Credits (theoretical, + practical), 2 Credits for Pharmacy internship and 4 Credits for thesis /project and its defense.

Assignment of Credits

  • Theoretical Courses: Two lectures per week per semester will be equivalent to Three Credits.
  • Laboratory/ Design : Credits for Laboratory or design courses will be one lecture per week per semester equivalent to one credits.
  • Credits are also assigned to project and thesis work taken by the students.

Entry Requirements for new applicants

  • Candidates must have a minimum aggregate GPA 6.50 in SSC/O levels or equivalent and HSC/A levels or equivalent (Diploma) examinations (in a total scale of 10)
  • Candidate must pass SSC/O levels and HSC/A levels or equivalents in Science group and obtain minimum GPA 3.0 (in a scale 5) without any additional subject.
  • Candidates must pass HSC/A levels or equivalent examination with a minimum GPA 3.0 in Chemistry and Biology separately and a minimum GPA 2.0 in Mathematics (in a scale of 5)
  • Candidate must pass HSC/A levels or equivalent examination in current year or one previous year.
  • Foreign students must have passed 12 education years and got same grades in equivalent examinations from foreign recognized institutions.
  • The student must pass HSC/A levels or equivalent with the following science subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.
  • Candidates having no mathematics at HSC/A levels or equivalents may be admitted and need to take an extra 3 (three) credit math's course.
  • Candidates who have completed HSC/A levels or recognized equivalent examination in current year or one previous year are eligible for admission.
