About Program
The Department of Civil Engineering offers a 4 year Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree program for prospective undergraduate students. This curriculum is offered for students seeking a broad and deep knowledge of the theory, design, and applications. In parallel to the theory, students attend semester classes, industrial visits, and training programs.
In the curriculum for the undergraduate program, besides the professional courses of Civil Engineering, there is a strong emphasis on acquiring a thorough knowledge in Basic Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Due importance is also given for the study of several in General Education which is expected will help the student to interact more positively with the society in which he lives. Thus the course contents of the undergraduate programs provide a blend of basic sciences and their engineering applications as well as their social relevance.
The first three semesters are spent on GEC, Basic Science, Mathematics, and an introduction to fundamental areas of Civil Engineering. The last two years complete the development of knowledge in most of the major branches of Civil Engineering and related topics. The fourth and subsequent semesters build directly on the knowledge of the basic subjects gained in the first three semesters and go on to develop competence in specific disciplines. In the fourth year, the students get the opportunity to choose some optional specialized courses and carryout comprehensive and thesis work. The Project and Thesis work provide an opportunity to develop initiative, self-, creative ability, and engineering judgments.
The undergraduate students of the Department of Civil Engineering have to follow the course schedule given below. The letter prefix in any course number indicates the department offering the course viz. CE for Civil Engineering, WRE for Water Resources Engineering, EEE for Electrical Engineering, CHE for Chemistry, PHY for Physics, MAT for Mathematics, GEC for General Education course and Shop for Workshops. There is a plan to offer M.Sc. in Civil Engineering in the near future.
